During WWII Japan decided it was their mission to conquer the world and rule over it with an iron fist. Obviously this plan failed, as all they have still is their tiny island off the coast of China. As you can see their beliefs during WWII were strikingly similar to that of the Germans. This was a big factor in how they treated their prisoners of war. In fact, they treated them so badly that later, after the war, Japan released a series of 71 apologies to the rest of the world for their actions during the war, these apologies were given way back from the 1950's all the way up to 2012.
When Japan entered the war they first attacked China in their attempt to unify Asia under Japanese power so they can more easily take over the world. After they took over a good portion of China they set their sights on the oil rich lands of the Dutch East Indies. America saw this and they tried to make an oil embargo on Japan. The Japanese responded to this with Pearl Harbor, thus bringing the U.S. into WWII.
