Right around when Japan joined the war they had a little Great Depression of their own. They needed a war to help them get back on their feet, so that's exactly what they did. They wanted other country's resources to help boost them back up to their former place economically. Manchuria's resources Japan wanted the most was iron, coking coal, soybeans, and land. All of these things were things that Japan did not have much of, making the idea of having more of these resources all the more favorable.
Japan wanted to become self sufficient so they didn't have to rely off of other countries and have to have necessities traded in. Once Japan got the things that they needed they could begin their takeover of the rest of Asia and then the world. The place that Japan was aiming to build their empire into was something of a Utopia if you think about it.

- Was it just Japan that had a depression? Most countries were in a depression before WWII.
- What happened to their rice and cotton trade? The values had greatly decreased because of lack of demand which also had been bringing down their economy before the war.
- How did the war fix their problem? It started the flow of money again because people were getting jobs and were able to buy things with the money they were earning.
They have given their sons to the military services. They have stoked the furnaces and hurried the factory wheels. They have made the planes and welded the tanks. Riveted the ships and rolled the shells. - President Franklin D. Roosevelt
